Our Exquisite Pollution
When thousands of fish died in Lake Erie in 2014 Sandra Hansen began investigating water damage in local waterways, the Great Lakes and the Pacific Gyre. Her research taught her that virtually all lakes, rivers and oceans are infused with hazardous materials. Even on a tiny island wildlife refuge in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, tens of thousands of pounds of new garbage piles up every year from ships, litter, industrial discharges, and garbage mismanagement. Sandra takes her audience from her research through her journey to becoming an environmental artist. She gradually moved from oil painting to creating art from plastic bags to making ecologically sustainable handmade paper art. This talk includes a 4 minute video of her Under the Sea Installation.
The program is available in formats ranging from a 20×20 presentation to a full 2‑hour session. Each longer version includes everything in the shorter ones, with additional images, research, and discussion. The 2‑hour program also includes a practical section on reducing our personal plastic footprint.
Papermaking Around the World
As a traveling artist, an environmentalist, and a papermaker, Sandra Hansen loves to travel on art trips around the world. This talk will not only tell you how to make paper, but will also help students to get really creative with paper. Paper is a sustainable art practice that has been around for 2000 years but it is becoming a dying art, (pun intended). Sandra has photos of paper making in the traditional ways from her trips to China, India, and Taiwan. This talk will compare the Western and Eastern paper making styles as well as two methods of papermaking; pouring and dipping paper. The talk ends with photos of Sandra’s art papers which have nothing in common with white computer paper.

Emmitt Till Memorial Triptych
This talk explains the nuances and symbols in the The Emmitt Till Memorial Triptych. The triptych tells the story of a 14 yr old African American boy who was tortured and murdered for whistling at a white woman August 28, 1955. His murder is a seminal event which electrified the Civil Rights Movement. The triptych references a medieval church altar piece.
