Handmade Paper Workshops
Sandra Offers Studio Workshops for Individuals and Groups
Sandra's workshops revive the art of handmade paper and journals, inviting students of all ages to explore plants, pulp, and creative play. Each session blends history, technique, and joy—so everyone leaves with beautiful papers or journals and a deeper understanding of the craft. Students in my longer workshops gain the skills needed to continue papermaking at home, while all participants leave with projects they are proud of.
The Paper Journey Studio Workshop Two‑hour journal‑making class
In this welcoming beginner workshop, students from 10-100 years create a personal 5 × 7 journal using a handmade paper text block and a sturdy cardboard cover. After a brief demonstration, everyone designs their own cover using materials from my studio or supplies they bring from home. Students add thoughtful details — a ribbon place holder, a button and elastic clasp — to make each journal uniquely theirs.
Extra journals and cover kits with instructions are available for purchase so students can continue their paper journey at home.
Lanterns, Starfish, and Stencil Sampler Two‑hour class
This lively two‑hour workshop introduces upper‑elementary students through adults to creative papermaking. Participants rotate through three hands‑on stations—kozo bark lanterns, stencil‑pulp pictures, and 3D starfish—exploring color, texture, and simple sculptural techniques. All materials are prepared and provided.
Immersive Papermaking Two day class
This full‑day workshop introduces students to traditional and experimental papermaking using cotton linters and pre‑cooked plant fibers. Participants prepare and blend pulp, form sheets through dipping and pouring, add color and simple inclusions, embed natural materials, and explore stencil textures. The day includes a brief history presentation, guided stations, and time for creative experimentation
Wild Paper Workshops Two day workshop
This two‑day workshop offers a deeper introduction to handmade paper for beginners and intermediate makers. Students prepare cotton and plant‑fiber pulps, form sheets with molds and deckles, explore pigmenting and embedded elements, and experiment with stencils, layering, and simple 3D forms. With guided instruction and time for creative play, participants build confidence while creating a range of expressive papers.
Botanical Papermaking Retreat Three day Retreat
This three‑day retreat includes the full Wild Paper experience and adds a final day devoted to creative applications. After two days of preparing natural pulps, forming sheets, and exploring color, texture, and 3D forms, students develop personal projects such as lanterns, bowls, wax or oil finishes, notecards, collages, or hand‑tinted sheets. It’s an extended, immersive space for beginners and intermediate makers to deepen their skills and follow their own creative direction.
